Fall Coats + Jackets

Coming to you with one of the topics I feel overqualified to share with you coming from Buffalo, NY - coats and jackets! When the weather turns, outer layers are an absolute must, and a girl’s gotta have options! I recently organized my heavier coats and jackets, so my favorites are fresh on my mind. From chillier temperatures to rain or snow, it’s important to be functional, but you don’t have to sacrifice being stylish too. It’s been a while since we’ve talked outerwear, and I wanted to share a few of my personal favorite styles as well as some inspiration on where I typically like to shop.

J.Crew will forever be one of my favorite spots for dressier coats, J.Crew Factory also offers similar options for less. I own this Daphne topcoat in several colors, and it’s genuinely one of my favorites because it has a hint of stretch to it, and it works beautifully over bulky layers. Sometimes I’ll wear a leather/moto jacket over an outfit, and this coat will work over that for extra warmth. It’s one of my favorite dressier options but works beautifully with denim or leggings.

Another J.Crew favorite above, similar style for less shown here. When it comes to coats, I like to experiment with sizing. Sometimes I purchase coats intending to wear them open, like the styles shown above. When I want to wear a coat open, I will experiment with sizes, often staying true to my size or even trying a size down. When I know that I’ll want to zip or button a coat, sometimes I’ll size up for my fuller bust and also the ability to wear thicker layers underneath. Bulky coats can oven overwhelm my frame and make me lose my shape, so I always try to find styles that define my waist and hit me at a nice spot.

Moving onto more heavy-duty cold and snow options, I love a good puffer jacket! They provide a ton of warmth, and when you find the right fit, they can accentuate the curves. Amazon has many great options, including this one which is packable and perfect for travel. I have a bunch more saved to my storefront list. The packable jackets are warm and an especially great option for people who don’t necessarily live in cold weather but like to have an option, especially when traveling north.

The warmest coat I have ever owned is this one. It’s not the most figure-flattering, but when you have to be outside in below-freezing temperatures, I can’t recommend this one enough. It has a bunch of zippers and pockets, I ended up keeping the XL and unzipping the side zippers for a little extra roominess in the hips.

If you’ve made it this far and you’re looking for lighter layers, I’ve got you! I recently shared some rainy-day inspiration, including this shell jacket which has been one of my favorites for years, I own it in two colors. It provides zero warmth but is the perfect layer for rainy days, you can wear a t-shirt or a bulky sweater underneath it depending on your temperatures. A classic trench coat will NEVER go out of style, I’ve owned this one for several years, and it’s a winner. I’ve previously shared my moto jacket picks on the blog and a denim jacket review.
