Your Fall guide to
Wedding Guest Dresses
Fall wedding season is here, so I’m back with an entirely new round of wedding guest dresses! This guide includes options for everything from outdoor ceremonies and cocktail receptions to formal and black-tie weddings, with a range of styles, sizes, and price points.
I’ve also included a section for MOBs + MOGs, since those are always some of the most-requested dresses. Before we get to the picks, here’s a quick breakdown of the dress codes you’re most likely to see on a fall wedding invitation… because figuring out what they actually mean is often the hardest part.
WEDDING ATTIRE, DECODED:
Casual or Daytime
“Casual” doesn't mean jeans, but it also doesn’t require your fanciest dress. A polished midi, elevated print, sophisticated jumpsuit, or simple long-sleeve style will fit right in at a daytime ceremony, winery, backyard celebration, or relaxed venue. To make the look feel like fall, reach for deeper colors, seasonal prints, and fabrics with a little more weight or texture. Finish with comfortable heels, flats, or boots when the setting allows.
Semi-Formal or Cocktail
This is one of the most common (and most flexible) wedding dress codes. Knee-length, midi, and dressy jumpsuit options all work beautifully. Look for something that feels elevated without becoming overly formal: satin, chiffon, lace, pleating, ruching, or a great statement sleeve. When in doubt, a sophisticated midi dress and a pair of heels are almost always a safe bet.
Formal or Black Tie Optional
Here’s your chance to turn things up a notch. A floor-length gown is always appropriate, but an especially elegant midi can work, too. Jewel tones, dramatic silhouettes, and luxe fabrics feel particularly beautiful during fall. “Black tie optional” simply means a tuxedo and gown are welcome, though guests have a little more flexibility than they would at a strictly black-tie event.
Black Tie
Time to go glam. Black tie traditionally calls for a floor-length gown in an elevated fabric such as satin, velvet, chiffon, or sequins. Choose a sophisticated silhouette, dressier accessories, and a small evening bag. You don’t have to shy away from color, emerald, navy, burgundy, chocolate brown, and deep plum can all feel just as elegant as classic black.
Garden or Outdoor
An outdoor fall wedding can be absolutely gorgeous, and a little unpredictable depending on where you live. Check the venue and weather forecast before deciding what to wear. Midi and maxi dresses are both lovely options, while block heels, wedges, or dressy flats will save you from sinking into grass or struggling over uneven ground. Bring a polished layer you’ll be happy to wear in photos, such as a wrap, tailored jacket, or faux-fur stole, once the temperature drops.
A Quick Note About Color
Unless the couple says otherwise, skip white, ivory, cream, and anything that could photograph as bridal. It’s also worth checking the wedding website in case the couple has requested a specific color palette or shared cultural attire guidance. Beyond that, fall is the perfect time to embrace saturated color, romantic prints, metallic accents, and rich neutrals.
The Finishing Touches
A beautiful dress is only part of the equation. The right undergarments can completely change how an outfit looks and feels, while a small clutch stocked with fashion emergency essentials can save the day when a hem drops, a strap slips, or a blister appears. Been there, packed that. I’ve linked my tried-and-true solutions below so you can feel comfortable, confident, and ready to celebrate from the ceremony through the last dance.
Now for the fun part, let’s find your dress!

BUMP-FRIENDLY STYLES FOR SPRING WEDDINGS
Wedding guest dressing can feel a little trickier with a growing bump, so I pulled together options that offer plenty of comfort without feeling overly maternity. Look for stretchy fabrics, smocked details, empire waists, and flowy silhouettes that give you room to grow, and still feel special enough for the occasion. Moms deserve to feel just as special on the big day! For fall weddings, I love rich colors like navy, burgundy, emerald, and plum, along with metallics and other seasonal shades. Whether you prefer classic lace, flowy chiffon, sleeves, subtle embellishment, or a more modern silhouette, the most important thing is finding a dress that feels polished and comfortable enough to wear all day.
