Baby Travel Tips

part two

It's time for another round of baby travel tips brought to you by yours truly. My son is now over eight months old, and we've embarked on over a dozen adventures together, and with each trip, we’ve become more confident travelers. With a few more trips under our belt over the last eight months, we have certainly learned a few tips and tricks for traveling with a baby! In case you missed it and are looking for more travel posts, I previously shared baby travel tips: part one, our favorite luggage, our top travel tips and five tips for traveling while pregnant.

things we’ve learned

START PACKING EARLY:

Overpacking seems inevitable, no matter how hard I try not to. One strategy that I like to do is to start gathering items into a pile/laundry basket as early as possible and edit things down as we get closer to departure. Stick to the essentials, and remember that you can most likely get things wherever you’re headed unless you go to a deserted island!

DEPARTURE TIMES:

We have recently gone from three naps to two naps a day, which has been an adjustment, but we try to plan our travel around nap times to minimize disruptions. Although he has always been great about sleeping in his car seat, we purchased his own seat and put him in the car seat on the plane, and he is usually pretty content in there for a while.

LOTS OF SNACKS:

I like to keep a stash on hand, which keeps him occupied for a while. I like to do the teething wafers like these and puree pouches which are great options that are easy to pack and not too messy.

ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS:

I like to have a plethora of different entertainment options during travel days, including toys, books, and maybe even a tablet or phone loaded with a little Miss Rachel or Dancing Fruits (no judgment here!).

STAY FLEXIBLE AND OPEN-MINDED:

Let's face it, things don't always go as planned when you're traveling with a baby. Stay flexible and roll with the punches. A positive attitude goes a long way! I do think they feed off your energy, especially when it comes to new experiences and environments, so try to stay cool, calm, and collected (easier said than done sometimes). I do think that being prepared and ready for all scenarios is key. Make sure you have an extra outfit or two, extra diapers/wipes, burp cloths, bibs, etc.

THINK THROUGH THE SLEEP SETUP:

Whether you’re borrowing a crib from the hotel or bringing along a travel crib (this one is our favorite), make sure your baby has a comfortable and safe place to sleep along with any accessories you need (we travel with our Nanit camera + sleep sacks).

a few Items WE LOVED

Some items we truly enjoyed on this trip include this play mat; we have two others at home and love that it gives a nice spot for him to roll around on, and it can be easily machine washed. These bibs are a must-have and are great for bringing along to restaurants. They catch anything that falls keeping clothes mostly clean. We like to “double bib” with these smocks to keep him fully clean while eating messier foods like yogurt and they pack easily. This crib packs down into a convenient little carrying case, making it easily portable for travel. We had a few items shipped due to our longer stay, like this folding high chair and this wipable changing pad. These disposable changing pads are great for on-the-go when changing in public restrooms. I also love this portable changing pad when I don’t want to lug the full diaper bag. This stroller attachment easily detaches and is easy to clean. This wooden toy is one of Conrad’s favorites, keeping him entertained and engaged for a long time!
