hello and welcome to

my living room

Very excited to dig into the living room, where we spend most of our time relaxing and entertaining, and the second room tour on the blog in our new home. If you missed our Primary Bedroom Reveal, you can check it out here! When we first saw the space, we knew it had a lot of potential and I’m so glad to finally have this vision come to life (after many months of furniture delays). We are still deciding on the artwork but for now, this is what we’ve put together. Below is a screenshot of the room layout that we decided on in August! It’s so fun to actually see it come to life now.

We worked closely with Michael P. Design of MichaelPDesign.com and Room to design the room to create a functional entertaining space. This room is long and narrow, so we struggled with the layout but eventually determined this would be the most practical for entertaining. Michael helped us choose our wall color, Benjamin Moore Classic Grey, the perfect neutral tone and changes depending on day and light. Our trim/other woodwork throughout the entire house is Sherwin Williams’ Pure White. We had all the woodwork and walls painted before we moved in.

Actually… Now that I think about it, I don’t think this room was technically completed when we moved in. You can kind of see it in the background of the main picture on this post which includes more details on our moving process. Above are a few “before” pictures of the space.

A LITTLE BIT OF A

fireplace transformation

When we first moved in, my dad was particularly excited and had a vision for revamping the fireplace. With pandemic-related delays still very prevalent, we decided early to invest in converting the wood-burning fireplace to a gas one and purchased it via Buffalo Fireplace. We also had the tile and door replaced; the tile was sourced via Room Buffalo. I posted a before and after on this Instagram post. It’s hard to believe it was the same space, it’s amazing what a little paint and new tile will do.

Let’s get comfy on the

Benchmade modern sofa

I had a unique opportunity to experience a BenchMade Modern sofa that was kindly gifted to us. As I mentioned before, pandemic-related delays were top of mind, so I knew we’d have to be patient, but I was intrigued by the brand and their custom luxury sofas made in 5 weeks. Before committing to a sofa, they sent me fabric swatches and life-size paper printouts to lay in the space to make sure it would fit. I ended up having more room than I initially thought, so we were able to get something larger. I would not have known that if I didn’t have the option to visualize. We ended up with the Skinnyfat Sofa in 100” Extra Deep in the Mcgee Flint fabric and stained walnut legs. We LOVE this sofa so much; I highly recommend checking them out if you’re in the market for new furniture. I’m embarrassed to admit that we’ve spilled so much on it already, but the performance fabric repels liquids, so it still looks pristine. We ended up purchasing another sofa for different room and have been beyond happy with the brand.

take THE LOAD OFF

SEATING

The two tan square chairs that you see in the space are over 15 years old from Mitchel Gold + Bob Williams that were purchased by my dad through Room Buffalo, the same style is still available here. I can’t remember the exact fabric swatch but ours is like a beige suede. They were in our previous home and still in pristine condition so we chose the color palette around them. As you can see, I went for a black, cream and tans vibe in the room! In the far corners we have these chairs purchased from Room that are easy to pull up to add more seating.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

LET’s TALK SCONCES

The previous owners of this home had installed a whopping 38 sconces throughout the entire house, with six in the living room. There were two above the fireplace that we decided to remove to put a larger 65 inch Frame TV there that also doubles as hanging art when not in use. After an initial search, I couldn’t believe how expensive sconces were, and the previous owners’ style was ornate and the current ones didn’t fit with the modern vibe of the room. Luckily, I found these stunning and under $45 sconces to replace and we’re really happy with them. I also had my eyes on these stunning white table lamps that were on extreme backorder but they were worth the wait!

MORE DETAILS

SIDE tABLE, COFFEE TABLE + WINDOW TREATMENTS

We love having a coffee table that doubles as a footrest but struggled to find something big enough. We originally purchased this rectangular tufted ottoman that we loved but ended up repurposing it for another space because it was too small. Eventually, we stumbled upon this leather showstopper piece, and we’re thrilled with it. One of the last things we ordered were end tables; I love these small side tables for the ends of the sofa and corner chairs. They’re the perfect size for beverages, and sometimes they double as dinner trays for us. I knew I wanted something solid underneath the lamp, so we purchased these 26” tables that arrived late and damaged but overall happy with them. We re-did all of the window treatments in the room; BK used Blinds.com to measure and custom order all of the roman shades. There were originally wooden shutters on the doors, but we decided to replace them with sheers sourced locally to brighten up the space.
