What I Actually Used During the Fourth Trimester: Postpartum and Newborn Essentials

Fourth Trimester Favorites

The fourth trimester is one of those things you can’t fully understand until you’re in it. You’re recovering from birth, running on broken sleep, trying to keep a tiny human alive, and somehow still expected to answer texts, feed yourself, and function like a normal person. It’s a lot!

This was my second time around, and while there were definitely products I knew I’d be using again, there were also a few things that completely earned their spot this time. Some made postpartum recovery more comfortable, some helped me feel a little more like myself, and others simply made life with a newborn (and an energetic toddler) run more smoothly. And while I firmly believe you do not need every gadget, organizer, or viral baby product the internet tries to sell you, there are a handful of things that I reached for so often they became part of my daily routine.

So if you’re expecting, newly postpartum, building a registry, or shopping for a friend who’s about to enter the newborn trenches, here are the products that genuinely got the most use in our house during those first few months. Here are the things that actually pulled their weight.

What I Used on Repeat

When people ask me what I actually used postpartum, the answer isn’t particularly glamorous. It wasn’t the fancy gadgets or the products that looked cute sitting on a registry. It was the handful of things I reached for over and over again because they made life easier, more comfortable, or simply required less brain power during a season when I had very little to spare.

Let’s start with the unofficial uniform of my fourth trimester: pajamas!

These pajamas have been a longtime favorite, but they absolutely carried me through those early postpartum weeks. Soft, lightweight, forgiving, and comfortable enough for middle-of-the-night feeds, contact naps, and the random Amazon delivery you forgot was arriving. I own them in an embarrassing number of prints at this point and have zero regrets. If you’re freshly postpartum and the thought of putting on real clothes sounds offensive, this nightgown is another favorite. Another pro tip: I had a designated section of my closet to postpartum/recovery-friendly clothes, so when I got ready, I just knew what section to pull from.

My favorite wire-free bra My favorite wire-free bra also got a lot of mileage. I’ve recommended it for years, but it became even more valuable during pregnancy and postpartum when comfort was non-negotiable. It offers enough support to feel put together without sacrificing comfort. If you’re looking for more options, I’ve rounded up my favorite wire-free bras in my guide here. The same goes for this underwear! It got me through pregnancy, the postpartum period, and beyond, and it’s still one of my most-recommended basics. Comfortable, smoothing, and doesn’t require constant adjusting throughout the day, which is really all I’m asking for at this stage of life. Hydration was another big one. Between feeding a newborn, chasing a toddler, and trying to remember basic human needs, drinking enough water wasn’t always top of mind. My no-spill water bottle lived beside me at all times, and these electrolyte packets helped make hydration a little more appealing. The blue raspberry lemonade flavor has been my favorite lately.

And if you've been here for a while, you know I have a soft spot for what I lovingly call a "slutty orthopedic sandal." I started prioritizing supportive footwear during my pregnancy with Conrad and never looked back. Lately, Archies have been my go-to. They're comfortable, supportive, and somehow still cute enough to wear with everything from leggings to matching sets.

None of these products are particularly groundbreaking, but they made my life easier during a season when every little bit of convenience mattered. And if you’re currently preparing for postpartum, be sure to check out my other resources, too. I’ve already shared everything that made it into my hospital bag, along with the postpartum essentials basket I kept stocked and within arm’s reach during those early weeks at home.

As a second-time mom, I was much quicker to identify what was actually making my life easier and what was just taking up space. These are the products that earned permanent spots in our daily routine. This swaddle was one of our most-used sleep products during those early weeks, we also follow their sleep training methods as well! There was definitely a learning curve, but once we figured it out, we were hooked. We also used this bassinet with both kids, and it’s one of those purchases I’ve never regretted. Pair that with the Nanitfor daytime naps and eventual overnights in her crib, and it gave me a lot of peace of mind during those early newborn days.

On the feeding front, this formula bottle maker and bottle / parts washer were worth every penny. When you're washing bottles, pumps, and all things baby around the clock, anything that saves time and mental energy is a win. Pro tip: if you have the Baby Brezza, order extra filters now. You'll thank me later!

This changing pad has also been worth every penny. Newborn diaper changes are messy, and being able to simply wipe everything down instead of changing covers constantly was a huge win. The same goes for this diaper caddy to have downstairs/in other rooms. I loved it with Conrad and immediately pulled it back out for Camille. Having diapers, wipes, cream, burp cloths, and outfit backups within reach anywhere in the house was incredibly helpful.

This nassal aspiratoris one of those products I recommend every chance I get. It helped us through countless congestion episodes with Conrad and has already gotten plenty of use with Camille. Not the most glamorous purchase, but definitely one of the most useful.

And finally, the Doona. We used it constantly. Being able to go from car seat to stroller in seconds made pediatrician appointments, errands, and quick outings so much easier, especially while juggling a newborn and a toddler. It’s one of the baby products that genuinely lived up to the hype for our family. Be sure to check out my full stroller guide for more of my favorites!

Looking back, these are the items I would immediately add to my cart again. They simplified our days, saved time, reduced stress, and helped us focus less on the logistics of newborn life and more on enjoying those fleeting early moments.

THANKS FOR READING!

Every baby is different, and every postpartum experience is too, but these are the products that genuinely made this season easier for our family. Some solved everyday problems, some made me more comfortable, and a few simply helped make the newborn haze feel a little more manageable.

I’d love to hear your postpartum or newborn MVPs. If there’s something you swear by that isn’t on this list, leave it in the comments… I always love discovering products through your recommendations. And if you’re currently in the thick of those newborn days, give yourself some grace. The days can feel long, but this season really is fleeting.

If you missed it, be sure to check out Camille’s birth story for all the details on her very fast (and very unexpected) arrival into the world.
