Baby K is...

A BOY!

Brian, Walter, and I are excited to share that we are expecting a baby boy this June! To say I was honestly shocked would be the understatement of the year. I realize there is a 50/50 chance, but all signs truly pointed to a girl. Keep reading/scrolling for how we found out, how I compare against some of the old wives’ tales, and my honest thoughts on having a son.

Since Walter wasn’t a part of our pregnancy announcement, I knew I had to include him in this news to share with our favorite online community if he’ll have a little brother or sister! He happily obliged. As they say, Walter got to have his cake and eat it too.

According to old wives’ tales…

I would actually love to speak to these wives’ telling tales because these ladies were pretty off for me! Nonetheless, it’s still pretty fun to see how I compared; they had a 50/50 shot.

how we found out

We found out fairly early in my pregnancy, around 10 weeks, via some preliminary bloodwork and genetic testing I had done. It took about a week to get our results back, and I remember poor BK was sicker than he’d ever been with a nasty virus, and we had actually been separated into different bedrooms to try and avoid me getting sick. I woke up and saw the notification, and I knew I couldn’t wait. So with Walter cuddled up at my side, I opened up the test results on my phone, took a deep breath, and sure enough, it said, “Y-chromosome detected.” It’s a boy. I laid there for about an hour, letting the news sink in along with the encouraging results that everything looked good. Brian came into the room about an hour later, and I had him view the results. He didn’t have much of a reaction (I’m going to blame it on all of the cold meds he was on), gave me an air hug, and went back to bed. I was going to have my mom look at the results first and get us a cake or something, but since BK was sick, we just went straight to the punch.

Finding out definitely made the process feel a lot more real, less gremlin-like, and more human. It allowed me to start visualizing and dreaming about what their life might look like, allowing me to start getting excited about things, even baby clothes! I also reached out to a few of my friends who have sons and have been encouraged and excited about this new chapter ahead of us.

If I’m being totally honest, I did not believe the blood test at first (despite its 99% accuracy) and needed it to be confirmed not once, not twice, but three times for me to 100% accept this was real and happening.

thoughts about a boy

This hopefully goes without saying, but we both honestly could not have cared less about what the results were. Healthy was our number one choice. As far as we know, we’re incredibly grateful to say that the baby is. We both wholeheartedly thought it was a girl, primarily due to how (morning) sick I’d been and those damn wives’ tales.

We have two nieces; my sister was born when I was 5 1/2, I have only female cousins on both sides, and I was a girls’ camp counselor for over twelve years. Girls feel so natural and predictable to me. Boys just feel so… foreign, I guess? I’ve probably changed hundreds of diapers, but never a boy’s, so this will be a new challenge!

I am comforted and looking forward to the fact I get to raise a decent man in today’s world. I hope to raise him kind, compassionate, and happy.

Thanks for reading!

I appreciate the opportunity to share my heart with you. Thanks for allowing this to be a safe space to share another piece of this exciting chapter! Did you think it was a boy or a girl? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’ll be back later this week with a recap of my second trimester.
