If you’ve been around here for awhile, you know that I’ve been modeling for 10+ years. In case you didn’t know that, you can learn more about my story here, if you’re interested! Although I’m a professional, it takes a LOT of photos for me to get THE shot. There are a bunch of factors that go into a great photograph, so consider it a perfect storm! Whether you’re just looking for some general tips or you have a photo session planned, I hope this helps you feel more confident.

practice + lighting

I know it sounds silly but practice in front of the mirror! Self awareness is key to photo taking, I’ve learned to know what my best angles/ movements are. It’s particularly helpful to practice facial expressions, especially smiling. If you’re preparing for a professional photo session, it may be helpful to practice how you’re going to wear your hair and makeup. In case you’re looking for a little inspiration, you can check out my updated hair tutorial and makeup guides. It’s also to take note and be aware of how the light hits you. You’ll notice whenever I’m talking on stories, I’m always standing in front of a window. Facing the light (making sure it’s not directly above you) always helps get a great shot.

posture + posing

My general rule of thumb is if you feel comfortable/ slouching/ standing how you normally would, it probably won’t look as good in pictures. It’s important to stand up tall and proud! You can pretend that you’re being pulled by a string from the top of your head. Good posture makes a huge difference, this is another one to practice in the mirror, especially with your hand placement. I like to do a variety of placing my hand on my hip and spacing my elbows away from my body to show my shape. To help with the appearance of my hands, I like to touch the tips of my thumb and middle finger. It creates a natural look without looking overly posed. It may be helpful to study some poses (feel free to scroll through my IG) and recreate them for yourself. One of my favorite moves my photographer likes to call the “Caralyn Leap” where I just shift my weight back and forth with one leg in front of the either (see photo below).

think happy thoughts

If you struggle with facial expressions and genuine smiles, think about things that genuinely make you happy! Sometimes ya gotta fake it until you make it! It’s best not to overthink how you look as the photos are being taken (sometimes it’s very obvious for me). If you feel awkward and miserable during the shoot, there's a chance that will show through the pictures. Just let go and have fun with it!

styling

If you have a professional shoot with others coming up, focus on coordinating and not perfectly matching. I prefer natural and muted colors like white, grey and blues / navy. I personally don’t love shooting in super bold patterns and prints (for the sake of being timeless), which is why I opt for solid colors in my engagement pictures. This probably goes without saying but make sure you try on your outfits WITH UNDERGARMENTS in front of a mirror. Move around, pose and see how the garment moves. Often times you may need a different bra or shapewear than you originally have thought. Better to sort that out before your day of shoot so you’re as calm as a cucumber. If you’re interested, I’d be open to creating a “photo friendly” outfit guide! UPDATE: I did a post on it here!

be kind to yourself + have fun

Be patient and allow yourself a few tries. Remember that even super models need a few (hundred) tries to get the shot! Remember to be kind to yourself, gf. Make the most of it and have fun!

I hope these tips are helpful, feel free to leave any questions below. As always, thanks for reading!
